Baby Constipation

Updated: Sep 28, 2019

Constipation in children is caused by changes in bowel movements and can be divided into functional constipation and organic constipation.

What we are discussing here is mainly the performance of functional constipation, and the treatment of pediatric constipation by Chinese medicine.

Most children with constipation show a decrease in the number of bowel movements. Because the frequency of defecation is small, the feces stay in the intestine for a long time, the water is fully absorbed and becomes dry and hard, and the discharge is difficult.

The children with anal fissure have bloody stools. Staining means not inadvertently soiling the underwear. It is seen in children with severe constipation. Because of the local caulking of the stool, the intestinal secretion can flow out unconsciously around the dry feces, which is similar to fecal incontinence.

Children with constipation often have gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Abdominal pain is often located in the left lower abdomen and umbilical cord, which can be relieved after hot compress or defecation. Children with bloating often have loss of appetite, body discomfort, and relief after defecation or deflation.

For children with constipation, because of their young age, it is more difficult to swallow drugs. For adults, we can use acupuncture to treat constipation, and the effect is very significant. Children are afraid of pain, acupuncture is not convenient and not safe.

Therefore, we use Chinese medicine massage techniques to promote intestinal peristalsis in children, and then click on the corresponding acupuncture points to promote defecation in children. For parents who accompany the children to see a doctor, we also teach them massage techniques, and help the children to massage regularly after returning home. After 1-2 visits, the problem of constipation in children can be basically solved.

In order to prevent recurrence of constipation, water intake can be increased to soften the stool, and more foods containing whole cellulose (whole wheat, fruits and vegetables) are also part of the treatment of constipation. Regular toilet habits are an important part of treating constipation. Whether there is any pollution or not, there should be sufficient toilet time after the meal, which is beneficial to children's memory of the frequency of defecation.
